President’s Day – 2024

Dear AFGE Family,

As we approach Presidents’ Day, AFGE Council 100 invites you to join us in honoring the remarkable leaders who have left an indelible mark on the course of American history. This special day, observed on the third Monday of February, provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the legacies of those who have guided our nation through triumphs and challenges.

Presidents’ Day traces its roots back to 1800, following the passing of George Washington, the nation’s first President. His birthday, February 22nd, became a day of national remembrance, recognizing his immense contributions to the founding of the United States. Washington’s leadership was instrumental in overseeing the passage of the Bill of Rights and establishing crucial precedents for the presidency.

Over time, Presidents’ Day evolved to honor not only George Washington but also other influential presidents who have shaped the fabric of our nation. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President, preserved the Union during the Civil War and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, forever altering the course of American history.

Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, played a pivotal role in expanding the nation’s territory through the Louisiana Purchase, while James Madison, known as the “Father of the Constitution,” championed the Bill of Rights and led the country through the War of 1812.

James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren each contributed to the growth and development of the United States in their own unique ways, leaving lasting legacies that continue to shape our nation to this day.

While individual states still honor specific presidents’ birthdays, Presidents’ Day has become a celebration of all U.S. presidents, past and present. It serves as a reminder of their leadership, resilience, and commitment to the ideals that define our great nation.

As we commemorate this long weekend, let us take a moment to reflect on the wisdom of Washington, the courage of Lincoln, and the vision of those who followed. Presidents’ Day invites us to appreciate the rich tapestry of our history and the enduring impact of our leaders.

In conclusion, let us raise a metaphorical toast to our presidents—those who have shaped our past and continue to inspire our future. Thank you for joining us in honoring the leaders of our nation this Presidents’ Day.

In Solidarity,

AFGE Council 100
