AFGE Council 100 Patriot Day 2025

As we reflect on this 24th year following the 2001 terrorist attacks that would forever change our nation and world history, we consider the work we have done and that which we commit to daily by rededicating ourselves to the mission of TSA and the Constitution we swore an oath to support and protect. Where were you when you heard? is an often-asked question by the inquisitive and answered by the obliging. Today, we ask: Where have you been since you heard? Many current employees began their federal careers with TSA upon its creation, whereas others started later, and some current employees were born after September 11th, 2001. For all of us employed at TSA, the last few years, including this year, has been a roller-coaster of big wins and significant loss.

Yet, like the tenacity and determination of those who overcame living through the various September 11th, 2001, disasters in New York City; Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and Arlington, Virginia, we continue to live in honor of those who were prematurely taken—by fighting another day until we are victorious once and for all. As we navigate these uncertain times of personal opinions and political discourse, ideological differences, attacks on workers and unions, support for those who have it all at the expense of those who do not, and as recent events have demonstrated, violence aimed at those with whom others may disagree, we must stand steadfast in the gap for the most vulnerable in our care and in remembrance of those who are no longer with us.

If we have learned anything from that fateful day on September 11th, 2001, let it be that we are stronger together as a nation—when we are united in our commonalities—rather than when we are divided by our differences. As a country, our decency, humanity, and empathy in time of our neighbors’ need—regardless of political affiliation or ideological difference—is the strength we should lean into this and every day. Let us never forget, yes, the tragic events, but also the inspiring stories, tremendous courage, and unwavering unity that followed 24 years ago. Due to the tragic catastrophe, sobering reality of the fragility of life, and our fighting resolve: Americans were finally united. As one nation. Indivisible.
